Scrap Wood Custom Jewellery box for Plugs

Gals! Guys! Friends of all configurations!
I can make things that fit neatly together. No really! It’s true – just look, I made this little custom jewellery box for plugs out of scraps of wood previously inlaid as tests and experiments. And it’s great – I’m not keeping my earrings in an old box for Dremel bits anymore.

I have stretched lobes, and wear 5/8ths plugs – mostly made of stone. When you wear plugs, your earring collection can start taking up quite a bit of space, especially since you don’t want to store the stone plugs in a jumble cuz they have a tendency to chip. Here’s my old earring storage solution… Not a great addition to my home decor.

I had this old piece of wood that I used for my first attempt at an inlay about a year ago – the inlay worked out fine so I’ve been trying to think of a project to make use of the piece of stock. At first, I just routed two channels in the top, the router did an okay job, but there was still some shaping to do – which I did by taping a slice of insanely rough (36 grit) sandpaper to a test tube, and then finishing it with finer grits. I used it like this for a few weeks – I liked it, but it still felt a bit like a chunk of 2×4 on the shelf.

Then I chopped the whole damned thing up and put it back together to have a sliding drawer. Which turned it into a custom jewellery box for plugs and a place to put my rings as well. I’ve been able to improve the preparation of surfaces that I’m joining, mainly through cleaner cuts. That has massively improved the strength of bonds and allows for more precise assembly and better glue-ups. This jewellery box has four plain old face joints that are incredibly narrow, but still quite strong.
